Beyond Bermuda is an exploration survival game set in an alien world.

 

It was being developed in Unreal Engine 4 by a team of 19 people.

My roles were art lead, character artist, texture artist, rigger, and animator.

Beyond Bermuda has players take on the role of Riley, a 16 year old girl whose summer vacation went awry. After her cruise ship passes through a rift in the Bermuda Triangle, Riley finds herself on an island that is not quite like Earth. Each new island greets Riley with more alien life and harsher conditions. Players must explore to collect resources, craft tools and structures, fight off aggressive fauna, and make their way back to the rift.

I joined Beyond Bermuda when it was a team of just 10 people. We grew to a team of 19 after Vertical Slice, and I became Art Lead. As Art Lead, I reviewed other artists' work before it was implemented in game. I ensured all art assets met quality standards as outlined in our documentation. I also provided feedback and help when needed.

As a character artist, I created four unique creatures based on fellow artists' concepts. Each creature is alien in nature, and I really enjoyed bringing them to life. I used a high to low poly workflow and started with a sculpt in Zbrush. I then used Maya to retopologize, rig, and animate. I used Substance painter to texture, then I implemented the characters into Unreal.

This panther-like creature was my favorite piece to work on during this project. It was my fourth and

final quadruped, and I feel as though I have improved greatly since my first. The creature can be

found in a glowing marsh biome, hence its pink emissives. It is an aggressive predator fauna, so

the leaves on its back help it camouflage in to the environment.

My third creature for Beyond Bermuda can also be found in the glow marsh biome. It lives fully on

land, but the area it inhabits was previously underwater. This has left the creature with flippers

and otter-like features. It is a passive prey fauna that will not attack the player.

This creature, named Snooty, was especially challenging. It was my first time ever rigging

and animating a quadruped. I definitely learned a lot through the process, and it greatly helped

me improve with my future creatures. Snooty is a passive prey fauna that will not attack the player.

Being a part of Beyond Bermuda really gave me the opportunity to grow as an artist and expand my skill set. I have become more comfortable in working on art assets from start to finish, and I have greatly improved my skills in rigging and animating. This was my first time being in a lead position and working with such a large team. I learned a lot from collaborating with my fellow teammates.
